The Poinsettia Bowl
If you’re spending the holidays in San Diego, be sure to check out the Poinsettia Bowl, one of the year’s college football spectacles. This year’s Poinsettia Bowl will take place on December 23 at Qualcomm Stadium to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego. This must-see game is the highlight of the college football holidays. But the fun isn’t just in the game itself. There are a ton of great events all over San Diego leading up to the game. Here are some of the most popular activities.
Two days before the Poinsettia Bowl, each of the participating teams will attend a special team day at two of San Diego’s largest attractions:and the San Diego Zoo. The team from the Mountain West Conference will be touring Sea World, and you can join them! See polar bears, beluga whales, and of course Shamu! Or join the at-large team as they take a walk on the wild side at the San Diego Zoo. Whether you prefer Monkey Trails or Forest Tales, the Zoo has something to bring the wild out in everyone.
After a day at the parks, head downtown to San Diego’s historic Gaslamp District for the Poinsettia Bowl Gaslamp March. Marching bands and spirit squads from the universities in the game parade up and down 5th Avenue, eventually meeting at Market Street for a college-style battle of the bands!
The game itself will surely prove to be a spectacular event. The pre-game show is lined up to have college marching bands as well as kids and their families from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. These children are set to serve as honorary team captains and will participate in the coin toss ceremony.
